VAMFF beauty trends

BRIGHT LIPS, winged liner and big brows dominated the runways at last week’s Melbourne Fashion Festival. Our beauty writer Carene Chong was there and shows you how to recreate the looks at home.

Presented by L’Oreal and Shop Til You Drop magazine, The Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival Beauty Workshop brought the latest trends from the runway to fashion and beauty lovers everywhere.

I felt like a celebrity as I entered the workshop, having been handed me a complimentary drink, a L’Oreal goodie bag worth $100 and a few free issues of Shop Til You Drop!

Shop Til You Drop beauty editor Lisa Patulny and L’Oreal makeup director Elsa Morgan presented the hottest makeup looks of the season.

So from Elsa to us to you, here are the top beauty trends from the catwalk:

Winged liner

A trend that has never gone out of style and doesn’t look like it ever will. Except this season, think more graphic and edgy than the classic thin line and flick.

To get the look, start at the centre of the lid with your eyeliner and work your way outwards. Work with small dashes to ensure you get the fine flick at the outer eye.

Always do your eyebrows before your liner. That way, you know that the end point of the flick is where your eyebrows end.

Now trace a line across the socket of your eye to the inner corners and colour in the space. Touch up with a few more dashes at the outer eye for a more defined cat eye-look.

If you’ve never attempted a winged liner before, try placing a business card or sticky tape over the outer eye to help guide you. This ensures the flick will be cleaner and straighter.

Finally, coat your lashes with good lashings of mascara for the ultimate bombshell look.

Eyes that pop

Who says you can’t wear green, blue or purple eyeshadow without looking like you’ve been punched in both eyes? All you have to do is get the shade, application and colour combinations right.

You might be familiar with powder eyeshadows, but don’t hesitate to use cream eyeshadow for added intensity.

Start with a good eyeshadow primer to ensure your eyeshadow stays on for longer. Proceed with a good cream base in your colour of choice. Don’t bother with a brush. Your fingers are all you need for application.

Next step, lightly dust powder eyeshadow with your finger over the cream base to seal the colour. This way, you get hours of wear without creasing.

Don’t be shy with colour, go bold! Pair a blue base with a green powder or an orange base with purple powder. When in doubt, stick to the same colour family for a great effect nevertheless.
